A Network Diagram of Corporate Power and the University System

Corporate Power
The attached image
is a visual representation of the interlocking power structure
that governs the modern American research university system. Each
university board is symbolized with a red dot, and the black lines
connecting the universities represent the interlocking directorates
of their trustees and regents, who, as directors of the same business
corporations constitute an elite social network, and create a
connection between university governance and corporate power.
For Instance - notice the line connecting Ohio State University
and Michigan State University in the bottom right of the network
diagram? This line represents a connection between each university's
board of regents by virtue of a regent of each university sitting
on the board of the Huntington National Bank Corporation. The
Huntington National Bank serves as a bridge between each school's
board of regents, just as literally hundreds of corporations do.
The thickness of each line depends on the number of connections
between respective universities with some having as many as 33
connections between them as is the case with the University of
Chicago and Northwestern University, and seven universities (top
left) having no trustees in positions of interlocking corporate
power with trustees from other universities.
