The Directorate of the American University System

The American University Directorate (trustees, regents, and overseers of the 50 largest US research universities) is composed of approximately 1807 individuals, the majority of whom sit on the boards of large business corporations, work as partners in the nation's most prestigious law firms, or are senior level executive officers in major multinational corporations. The directors also know one another through co-memberships in industry and trade associations (such as the US Business Council, or the Petroleum Institute), and policy organizations and non-profits (such as the Brookings Institute or Council on Foreign Relations).

For the most part, these 1807 individuals are drawn from the upper percentiles of American society, where wealth is the most concentrated and power exercised as a right. A sample of the political activities of the university directorate shows that most of them are contributors to federal and state political campaigns [Word doc. download] , with several individuals in this survey serving as cheif liasions and political advisors for Republican and Democratic politicians and the parties (for example see - UC Regent Gerald Parsky, chief California liason for President Bush, or Pennsylvannia State University Trustee Alvin Clemens who served on Governor Tom Ridge's Banking and Insurance Transition Team in 1995).

A significant number of the university directorate bridge the realms of American sceince and engineering, and education, with the military-industrial complex and armed forces. As trustees of the largest and most prestigious US universities they make decisions regarding institutional policy, finance, and external relations. As directors of the nation's military-industrial enterprise their interests in the university are in maintaining the military funding of science and engineering and the extensive dependence between the political ends of the warfare state and the cultivation of new technological means that sprout from the university system.

The following lists of university directors is organized by university, in rough order of total research performed by each school. Immediatly nderneath each director's name is a list of business corporations in which the currently hold executive office or serve as a director for. The second line in parenthesis lists business corporations the trustee formerly held office or worked for. The third line lists random non-profit organizations and government positions the trustee is or has been affiliated with. These lists should not be taken to constitute a comprehensive lists of corporate and non-profit affiliations.
